METROLOGY AND INSTRUMENTATION LAB

Lab Incharge : Dr. Piu Jain

Lab Technician: Mr. Kuldeep Chhikara

The Metrology and Instrumentation Lab is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in precision measurement and quality inspection. This lab is an essential part of engineering education, ensuring students develop the skills needed to measure, analyze, and maintain dimensional accuracy in manufacturing and mechanical components.

Lab Overview:

The lab is equipped with advanced measuring instruments that help students understand fundamental and modern metrology concepts. It enables them to perform precise measurements, calibration, and error analysis, ensuring high-quality standards in engineering applications.

Key Equipment in the Lab:

  1. Surface Plate – Provides a reference surface for accurate measurements.
  2. Profile Projector – Used for magnified visual inspection and dimensional analysis.
  3. Tool Maker Microscope – Helps in measuring small machine components with high accuracy.
  4. Vernier Height Gauge – Used for vertical measurements with fine precision.
  5. Vernier Caliper – A versatile instrument for internal and external measurements.
  6. Micrometer – Ensures accurate measurement of small dimensions.
  7. Vernier Bevel Protractor – Measures angles with high precision.
  8. Slip Gauges – Used for calibration and reference in precision measurement.
  9. Sine Bar – Essential for measuring angles with high accuracy.
  10. Snap Gauge – Used for quick and precise checking of dimensions.
  11. Comparator – Detects minute variations in measurement to ensure accuracy.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the correct use of basic measuring instruments such as vernier calipers and micrometers.

  2. Apply angle measurement techniques using sine bar, slip gauges, and bevel protractor.

  3. Perform thread measurement using instruments like floating carriage micrometer, tool maker’s microscope, and profile projector.

  4. Identify surface characteristics and explain the significance of surface texture in engineering measurements.

This lab plays a crucial role in developing competency in engineering metrology, preparing students for careers in manufacturing, quality control, and product design.
